FURNITURE AND PATTERN DESIGN
Nemu Storage Boxes seek to respond to the loss of possession and the suspension of culture through the migration process. They are created from modest, utilitarian materials that are common to the moving process. The corrugated cardboard boxes are led with one’s possessions, which will be taken with them from their homeland to their new home. Upon arrival, the boxes can be re-purposed by refolding to create a piece of furniture for use in one’s new life.
The exterior and interior of each box has been silkscreened with details from four prevalent immigrant cultures in the United States – Africa, China, the Middle East, and Mexico. The storage elements, which can be coupled together or used on their own, become a symbol of new opportunity when permanently placed in their new form and location.
